Challenges of starting university as a deaf teen
Nineteen-year-old Meghan Durno has been profoundly deaf all her life and had her first hearing aid when she was three months old.
She recently decided to have a cochlear implant fitted, a surgically implanted electronic device that can improve hearing by stimulating the auditory nerve.
After surgery, Meghan had to wait four weeks before the implant could be switched on, as the area needs time to heal. During this time she started studying for a university degree and had to rely purely on lip reading, which made her first months at university very challenging.
Find out more about Meghan's story in Deaf Teens: Hearing World on Monday 6 February at 21:00 GMT on BBC Three.
