Do elephants grieve like people do?

When an elephant dies, does the family grieve? When a cat loses its sister, does it mourn as a human would?

Barbara J King, a professor of Anthropology at the College of William & Mary, explores these questions in her new book, How Animals Grieve.

From monkeys living in the wild to pet bunny rabbits, Ms King cites studies and anecdotes of animals seeming to exhibit signs of grief after loss.

Though she stops short of saying animals mourn as humans do, she contends that many species have very real feelings, and some even grieve.

The BBC visited the Virginia Zoological Park with Ms King as she made her case for emotions in the animal kingdom.
