Houston Rap: A portrait of drugs, death and DIY hip hop

The rivalry between East and West coast rap in the US is well documented - but fewer people know about Houston's unique hip hop scene.

In their book Houston Rap photographer Peter Beste and writer Lance Scott Walker introduce the world to the heavy bass and slowed-down sounds that perfectly fit the city's sweltering climate.

They also chronicle the rappers - many of whom produced their music on their own labels - and the inner city, African American neighbourhoods they come from.

Walker talked to the BBC about music, drugs and violence as well as the resilience of a community which remains hopeful and proud despite its troubles.
