Looking back at when and why Americans trusted their government

It was 40 years ago that Richard Nixon left the White House, becoming the only US president ever to resign from office.

The episode dealt a blow to the trust Americans had for their government in Washington - a trust already slipping since the presidencies of Dwight Eisenhower and John F Kennedy.

Did Nixon's resignation mark the lowest point for the public's faith in their lawmakers?

The Pew Research Center assembled data from 1958 to the present, external, charting the highs and lows of trust in the federal government.
