Pink diamonds: Unlocking the rare jewels' secrets
Pink diamonds are among the world's rarest jewels. In October, a new world record was set at an auction in Hong Kong when an 8.41-carat pink diamond sold for $17,768,041 (£11,438,714) - more than $2.1m (£1.8m) a carat.
But in spite of their value, nobody knows for certain why pink diamonds are pink. Scientists at the Smithsonian research complex in Washington DC are hoping a collection of gems from Australia may unlock the mystery. Jane O'Brien reports.
