Osman had been arrested and tortured in Sudan for his political activities when he escaped from a state-run hospital treating him for injuries sustained during an interrogation.

Our World: Calais - The Final Frontier is broadcast on Saturday 31 January at 11:30 GMT on BBC World News and 21:30 GMT on the BBC News Channel.
