The British war brides who sailed to Canada for love

Betty Akhurst was 19 and in love. During World War Two she and many other British and European women fell for the handsome Canadian servicemen posted to Europe to fight for the allies.

In 1946, after a brief romance, Betty married Canadian paratrooper Ken Hawkins.

Betty left her family and friends in north London for a wooden house with no running water, electricity or bathroom in rural New Brunswick.
