Questions for my great grandfather, who died in Somme

The Battle of the Somme during the First World War (1914-1918) lasted nearly five months and caused more than one million British and German casualties.

On the first day alone, 1 July 1916, the British Army suffered 60,000 casualties with 20,000 men killed.

It is widely regarded as the worst day in British military history.

Services and commemorations have been held around the UK to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the battle.

Jenny Leatherby's great-grandfather, Alfred Deadman, died during the battle when he was 28-years-old, the same age she is now.
