Highlights from The Sky At Night as it marks 700 editions

In April 1957, a 34-year-old amateur astronomer presented the first of what was expected to be a series of three programmes on the stars.

With the exception of one programme in 2004, Sir Patrick Moore has presented every edition of The Sky At Night, making it one of the longest running television programmes ever.

The programme has shown the first pictures of the far side of the Moon, eclipses - sunny and otherwise - and Venus's transit of the Sun in 2004.

BBC News looks back at some of the highlights from almost 54 years of the show.

The Sky At Night: 700 Not Out is on Sunday 6 March on BBC One (check local listings for times) with an extended edition on Tuesday 8 March at 1930GMT on BBC Four. It can also be watched again on the BBC iPlayer.
