How to artificially inseminate a rhino

Assisted reproduction is becoming an increasingly common tool for conservationists who are fighting to save species.

At ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, they are using assisted insemination, where the sperm is taken from a male rhino and inserted into a female, to try to boost their population of southern white rhinos.

The zoo's head vet Tim Bouts explains how the process, which is being performed by a specialist team from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) in Germany, works.
