Happy goats: How animal rehab works

Scientists from Queen Mary, University of London have been measuring the moods of goats at a sanctuary in Kent, in order to work out if the animals recover fully from neglect and cruelty.

To work this out, the team tested the goats in an experimental enclosure containing hidden food rewards. Their test measured how "optimistic" or "pessimistic" the goats were as they explored the enclosure in search of food.

The researchers say the study provided them with an "objective measure of the animals' mood" and that it demonstrated that, with the right care, mistreated animals can be fully rehabilitated.
