Kakapo on ugly animal shortlist

The public has voted for the critically endangered kakapo as one of the top five ugliest animals in the world, in a campaign designed to highlight the conservation plight of less "classically charismatic" creatures.

The public vote, organised by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, was won by the deep-sea-dwelling blobfish.

The birds are native to New Zealand and, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), there are fewer than 130 of them left in the wild.

In this clip from the BBC documentary Last Chance to See, Mark Carwardine and Stephen Fry get a rare glimpse of a female kakapo sitting on a very precious egg.
