Sound as Voyager 'leaves Solar System'

The data acquired by Nasa's Voyager 1 spacecraft as it left the Solar System has been converted into an audio file.

The probe became the first manmade object to leave the Solar System and is now moving in the space between the stars.

It was launched in 1977, initially meant to study the outer planets, but then it just kept going.

This is the sound of the thin gas made up of particles that exist in the space between the stars. It was recorded over several months (October 2012 to May 2013) and compressed into a few seconds.

Voyager 1 is now almost 19 billion km (12 billion miles) from home.
