UK short-haired bumblebee 'back from extinction'

The short-haired bumblebee is back from extinction in the UK.

The species vanished from the UK in the late 1980s but conservationists at Dungeness in Kent have been working on its return.

The Today programme's science correspondent, Tom Feilden, heard from the RSPB's Dr Nikki Gammans, who leads the project. She said she was looking to recreate the study across the UK "and see our bee numbers increase".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 17 September 2013.
