Garden birds: How feeding brought blackcaps to the UK
Putting out bird feed in Britain's gardens is shifting the migration of one winter visitor, the blackcap, according to research.
Scientists from the British Trust for Ornithology used data from a 12-year-long garden bird survey in a study that revealed that many European blackcaps' winter migration has shifted north to the UK.
These birds used to migrate from Central Europe to the Mediterranean, but climate change and a reliable supply of garden food is now bringing more of them to Britain.
Here, lead researcher Dr Kate Plummer from the BTO explains to BBC science reporter Victoria Gill how this was the first study to show that by putting out food in gardens, people can influence the migration of a species.
