Schoolchildren react after historic call to Tim Peake

Sandringham School in St Albans has made history by making the first amateur radio call from the UK to a British astronaut on the space station.

The children contacted Major Tim Peake and quizzed him as he flew overhead on Friday morning.

Pupil Jessica, who has recently passed her radio exams, led the conversation and told the BBC's Rebecca Morelle that it had not yet hit her how big the event was: "When I get home, I'll be completely in shock."

Fellow student Philip, 15, said Major Tim had given a good answer to his question and had inspired him to study science subjects: "I want to be a spaceman when I grow up like Tim, it would be amazing!"

The school is taking part in this year's BBC News School Report - the 10th year of the project.
