New European plan for data protection after Snowden
Europe could soon be operating its own cordoned-off portion of the internet if proposals by German Chancellor Angela Merkel win support.
The idea has been prompted by revelations by whistleblower Edward Snowden about the extent of US spying.
And users of WhatsApp have expressed concern about Facebook buying the messaging service, raising privacy issues.
