Severn estuary dam proposals are shelved

Plans for a Severn estuary barrage tidal energy project costing £30bn have been scrapped.

The dam was meant to run from Weston-super-Mare to Cardiff and its supporters claimed it could have produced up to 5% of the UK's energy.

However Energy Secretary Chris Huhne said a study had found there was "no strategic case" for the scheme.
