UK 'obliged' to allow some prisoners to vote

The Government has confirmed it is planning to give convicted criminals in jail the right to vote.

Five years ago the European Court of Human Rights decided that the present ban is unlawful.

Ministers have been advised that continuing to resist the ruling would lead to costly compensation payouts.
