The importance of the Magna Carta

A ceremony has taken place marking the start of celebrations leading up to the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta.

Adrian Yalland from the Magna Carta Trust says the document is "hugely important" because "it governs the way we live our lives, 800 years ago, today and into the future".

The BBC's John Maguire reports from Runnymede, where King John petitioned and sealed the first great charter in 1215.
