Rail fares up by average 6.2% in new year

Passenger groups have strongly criticised the decision to increase train fares by an average of more than six per cent in the new year.

Ashwin Kumar, director of Passenger Focus says that in the past they "have been told exactly what the rise would be in each company and that fares can vary by train company, but the increases can also vary by individual routes".

But Michael Roberts from the Association of Train Operating Companies says it is necessary to ensure continued investment in the railways.
