A failed drop of vital supplies in Helmand, July 2006
April 2006 saw the first major deployment of British troops into Helmand Province in Afghanistan.
After a prolonged period of fierce fighting, food, water and ammunition were running so low that the British military attempted to drop vital supplies from a plane in the middle of the night.
The aircraft, however, missed its target and soldiers could only watch in despair as the Hercules passed overhead and dropped its cargo into enemy territory.
Troops were told to prepare for being overrun and captured.
