Riots cause prison population to swell

The number of people in prison in England and Wales has risen by about 100 a day over the past week, because of the high number of people being jailed for looting and rioting.

The Prison Governors Association, which released the figures, says there is no immediate crisis but it is warning the institutions could run out of space if they continue to fill up at the same rate.
