Lack of direct flights 'costs UK billions'

A report out today which was commissioned by BAA, says that the UK economy is losing billions of pounds worth of trade with emerging markets due to a lack of direct flights to destinations in those areas.

According to Frontier Economics, the UK is currently losing out on £1.2bn of trade while competitor countries are winning business due to their better connections.

That number will rise to £1.6bn a year in ten year's time.

Colin Matthews is the chief executive of BAA which operates six airports in the UK including Heathrow. He spoke to BBC Breakfast about the report.
