Bloody Sunday compensation payouts could be in the 'thousands'

The government has announced it is to pay compensation to the families of those killed and wounded on Bloody Sunday.

Thirteen marchers died when British paratroopers opened fire on crowds at a civil rights demonstration in Londonderry on 30 January 1972.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has written to legal representatives of most of the families after a request to Prime Minister David Cameron.

The MoD said it intends to resolve the claims as quickly as possible.

Northern Ireland journalist Alan Murray tells BBC news the payouts offered to the victims' families could be in "the thousands".
