London to trial 'alcohol tag' scheme

People convicted of serious alcohol-related offences in London will be given American-style sobriety tests in a trial planned to begin this summer.

The scheme is based on that used in South Dakota, where problem drinkers are fitted with electronic tags to monitor their alcohol intake.

Those who fail to stay sober are given a short prison sentence - but critics say the scheme fails to address the issue of genuine drinking problems.

Catrin Nye reports.
