Falklands War: Thatcher defends Belgrano sinking

The sinking of the veteran Argentine cruiser General Belgrano by British submarine HMS Conqueror causes the biggest single loss of life in the Falklands war as more than 320 Argentines are killed.

The sinking becomes a cause celebre for British anti-war campaigners, who claim the ship was sailing away from the conflict.

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher defends the action, saying "that cruiser and associated destroyers... pose a very obvious threat" to the British task force.
