Petrol 'costs families more than food'

As petrol prices hit a fresh high, new figures suggest that refilling a car with a 50-litre tank now costs more than the average family's weekly food bill.

Fuel sales jumped 4.9% last month as drivers stocked up fearing a strike by fuel tanker drivers, but many now say they are trying to cut back on journeys.
