Dangerous dog owners to face tougher punishment

Owners of dangerous dogs who are convicted in England and Wales are to face tougher punishments under new guidelines.

The Sentencing Council for England and Wales says people who fail to stop their dog harming should face up to 18 months in jail, instead of the current 12 months.

The move follows a rise in recent years in the number of people sentenced for dangerous dog offences.
