Spaghetti Junction: Gravelly Hill Interchange opened 40 years ago

It is now 40 years since the Gravelly Hill Interchange opened - better known as Spaghetti Junction.

The sprawling network of carriageways at junction six of the M6 connects the A38(M) Aston Expressway into central Birmingham.

It was given its more popular name by newspaper reporter Roy Smith, who said that from the sky it looked like spaghetti on a plate.

Mystifying some motorists, its numerous carriageways, supported by more than 500 concrete columns, follow the line of the local canal and river network on elevated sections.

The BBC's Phil Mackie spoke to Highways Patrol officer Steve Price about how Spaghetti Junction is managed - and why it holds a special place in the hearts of many Midlands residents.
