Shafilea Ahmed murder: Friends 'overwhelmed' by verdict

The parents of 17-year-old Shafilea Ahmed have been found guilty of her murder and jailed for a minimum of 25 years.

The teenager went missing from her home in Warrington, Cheshire, in 2003 and was found dead on the banks of the River Kent in Cumbria six months later.

Iftikhar, 52, and Farzana Ahmed, 49, had denied her murder but the jury at Chester Crown Court returned guilty verdicts against them both.

Speaking after the verdict, Shafelia's friends described her as "extremely ambitious and a great person to be around".

Melissa Powner and Kat Moore said that they "needed justice" and could take some comfort from the verdict.
