London Metropolitan University Vice-Chancellor on visas

The vice-chancellor of London Metropolitan University has said there would have to be "financial replanning" after it was banned from granting visas to overseas students after the government found some could not speak English well enough and did not attend lectures.

Professor Malcolm Gilles told Martha Kearney on The World at One that international students brought in 18% of its income, and he hoped it would not lead to closure of the university that dates back to 1848.

He said it was too early to talk about potential legal action, saying there were "quite complex issues" and it was still trying to understand how the government decision was fair as it considered the damage to its reputation.
