Sir Norman Bettison: Liverpool Mayor questions pension

Sir Norman Bettison has resigned as chief constable of West Yorkshire Police, saying an inquiry into his role after the Hillsborough tragedy was "a distraction" to the force.

He has denied claims he helped "concoct" a false version of events.

Sir Norman had been due to retire in March but had faced calls for him to go early.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said he believed Sir Norman had been "pushed" to go.

He added: "Most people will find it offensive that he will continue to receive a huge pension whilst this investigation continues."
