Archbishop of Westminster attacks gay marriage plan

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales has used his Christmas Eve sermon to attack the government's plans for gay marriage.

Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols called the plans a "shambles".

Meanwhile, the outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury said the Church of England's credibility had been damaged by the recent vote against women bishops.

At the Vatican, the Pope called for a political solution to the conflict in Syria during his Christmas message.

Robert Pigott reports.
