Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall: Mackerel overfishing 'infuriating'

The Marine Conservation Society has just downgraded mackerel from its list of fish suitable to eat.

The society says that international arguments about quotas mean it is no longer a sustainable choice.

Mackerel sales in this country soared by 14% after the TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall launched his campaign to get people to eat more fish.

Speaking to The World at One presenter Martha Kearney, Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall explained that "This is because of a dispute between the Norway and the EU on one hand and Iceland and the Faroe Islands on the other hand."

"They need to sort it out," he said.

He explained that "right now it is not too late" for the mackerel population, "but if they continue to fish it they way they have fished it in the last couple of years it will go down very fast".
