High-speed rail route pros and cons

The BBC's Danny Savage looks at the details of the next phase of the £32bn HS2 high-speed rail network which has been unveiled by the government.

The preferred route of phase two goes from Birmingham northward along two branches: to Manchester Airport and Manchester; and via Toton near Nottingham, to Sheffield and Leeds.

Chancellor George Osborne said it would be "the engine for growth in the north and the midlands of this country".

Phase one's London-Birmingham link has already faced considerable opposition.
