Horsemeat: Shadow environment secretary on findings

The food industry has been told to carry out urgent tests on all beef products after some Findus lasagne were found to contain up to 100% horse meat.

Findus withdrew the meals from sale after its French supplier raised concerns.

The Food Standards Agency has called the situation "appalling".

Talking to the Today programme's Sarah Montague, Mary Creagh, the shadow environment secretary, explained that "it's vital that people... have confidence that food that they buy is properly labelled, legal and safe for them to eat."

When asked if she would eat a processed frozen beef product, she added: "I certainly wouldn't"

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson has said the government is working closely with businesses to "root out any illegal activity" and enforce regulations.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, external on Friday 8 February 2013.
