Animals 'suffering from long winter'

The winter weather has delay the offset of spring.

The Wooland Trust has seen a significant drop in the number of early indictors compared with last year.

Dr Kate Lewthwaite, from the Woodland Trust, explained to Today presenter Evan Davis that they are concerned that species that are hibernating may run out of fat reserves and if bats come out at the moment there would be virtually no insect food around for them to feed on.

David Steel, the National Trust's head ranger for the Farne Islands, explained that seabirds like puffins and shags have also been suffering from the cold weather.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 28 March 2013.
