G8 move on sexual violence 'a turning point'

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague has hailed as a "turning point" a plan to tackle sexual violence in conflict, agreed at a meeting of the G8 in London.

He said the ministers had pledged "to work together to end sexual violence in conflict", which he said was his own "personal priority" for the talks.

"Ending the 17th and 18th century slave trade was deemed impossible... and today we know the facts about sexual violence in conflict and we have the means to address it", he told reporters.

The UN's Zainab Hawa Bangura said the move by the G8 represented "remarkable progress".
