Drug-use rooms need 'careful design'

Brighton could become the first city in the UK to provide rooms where people would be able to use illegal drugs safely without the fear of prosecution.

Research carried out by the Independent Drugs Commission for Brighton and Hove city council proposes providing 'drugs consumption rooms'.

The rooms would allow heroin addicts to take drugs under medical supervision. The supervised centres already play a major part of treatment programmes in countries like Holland.

BBC Radio 5 Live's Breakfast spoke to Professor Neil McKeganey from the Centre of Drugs Misuse Research and Mike Trace is Vice Chairman of the Independent Drugs Commission who wrote the report.
