Teenager wins police custody ruling

The policy of treating 17-year-olds as adults when in police custody has been successfully challenged by a teenager.

The High Court ruled the policy was "incompatible" with human rights law, and gives 17-year-olds the rights to contact "an appropriate adult" if arrested.

The case was brought by Hughes Cousins-Chang, now 18, who had been kept in custody for 12 hours and strip-searched before being released on police bail.

Clive Coleman reports.
