Merseyside Police: 'Out-of-control' dog posed serious risk

Police investigating the death of a pensioner, who was attacked by a dog in Liverpool on Saturday, said officers were confronted by an animal that posed a "serious risk".

Detective Chief Superintendent Tim Keelan of Merseyside told BBC News that Clifford Clarke had sustained "catastrophic injuries".

Armed officers were called to Mr Clarke's home by a neighbour who said the pensioner was under attack.

Two women who were arrested, are also being questioned on suspicion of an offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act following the attack.

Merseyside Police destroyed the dog.
