William Roache 'will vigorously protest his innocence'

Coronation Street actor William Roache has appeared in court accused of indecently assaulting four girls aged between 12 and 16 in the 1960s.

Mr Roache, 81, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, appeared at Preston Magistrates' Court.

Speaking outside court before the hearing, Mr Roache's lawyer said he was looking forward to standing before a jury to "vigorously protest his innocence".

He added that the charges had been "deeply upsetting" for Mr Roache.
