Veteran: Russian Arctic Convoy medals mean a lot

Hundreds of Arctic Convoy veterans are to receive a Russian bravery medal.

The government has decided to let the veterans wear the Ushakov Medal after previously saying it broke rules in foreign decorations, because veterans had already received a UK medal for their service.

But an exception has been made and President Putin awarded the first of those medals earlier this week.

Len Dibb-Weston was a merchant seaman who spent three weeks in the Arctic during World War II.

Speaking to the Today programme, he said: "It's full recognition by the Russians. It means a lot and we're very proud to wear the Russian medals."

First broadcast on the Today programme on Tuesday 18 June.
