'Your pop-up tent's a camping cop-out'

Thousands of campers flocked to campsites all over the UK this weekend to enjoy the sun, the smell of sizzling bacon frying in a pan and the fresh morning dew underfoot.

But can you be a true camper if you use a pop up tent? Traditionally part of the experience of camping is labouring for hours to erect a tent and standing back proudly to enjoy your own achievements.

Benedict Allen, writer and explorer, told the Today programme's Justin Webb that the most memorable part of camping is struggling with the tent poles.

Fiona Russell, journalist and blogger, said that she "wouldn't be taking a pop-up tent up a mountain anytime soon".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 16 July 2013.
