Four prisons in England are earmarked for closure

Four prisons in England are to close and a new 2,000-inmate super prison built in Wales, the Ministry of Justice has announced.

Reading prison in Berkshire, Dorchester in Dorset, Blundeston in Suffolk and Northallerton in North Yorkshire will be closed and Feltham Young Offender Institution in London replaced.

The new £250m jail will be built on the Wrexham Industrial Estate in north Wales, creating 1,000 jobs, the government said.

Home Affairs correspondent Danny Shaw says there is unlikely to be a net increase in prison places, which will concern penal reform groups.
