Hundreds of thousands of workers hit by the US shutdown returned to their jobs on Thursday after President Barack Obama signed a law to extend the country's debt limit.

The cross-party deal approved in Washington funds departments until 15 January.

Federal government employees said they were "excited" to get back to the office, but some fear another shutdown could happen soon.
