Michael Fish: St Jude Storm 'hasn't beaten famous 1987'

Around 220,000 homes are without power, while rail services across much of southern Britain have been cancelled as high winds brought down trees.

Network Rail said the damage was "worse than expected", while 130 flights have been cancelled at Heathrow airport.

Michael Fish, the former BBC weatherman, told the Today programme's Evan Davis that "it hasn't beaten the famous 1987", although his home is one of the thousands affected.

Minister at the Department for Transport Robert Goodwill said: "We have done everything we could physically do short of predicting what trees were going to fall down."
