Typhoon Haiyan: UK sends £5m aid to Philippines catastrophe

Britain has sent financial aid and humanitarian specialists to help the Philippines victims of Typhoon Haiyan, the international development minister has confirmed.

Alan Duncan said UK aid workers reached the Philippines on Saturday, where they will assess the damage and co-ordinate with other international agencies to move much-needed shelter and supplies to the areas they are needed.

Police in the Philippines fear 10,000 people may have died, while hundreds of thousands are reported to have been displaced by Typhoon Haiyan.
