Theresa May: Modern Slavery Bill 'landmark legislation'

Home Secretary Theresa May has rejected criticism of draft legislation to tighten laws against slavery, saying that "the victim is at the heart of what we're doing".

Her comments came after an anti-trafficking campaigner suggested the focus of the Modern Slavery Bill was "too narrow" and that there was "a real lack of focus on victim protection".

But speaking to BBC Breakfast, the home secretary argued that the "landmark legislation" would give authorities greater powers to crack down on those responsible for slavery and trafficking offences - thereby ensuring fewer victims suffered at their hands.
